The sender for the gauge and the switch for the low-fuel light sometimes aren't connected. My Lada's low-fuel light will come on around a half tank when I'm cornering or off-camber. My Jeep's fuel gauge wandered around all over the place, but the light would come on reliably with about 5 gallons left in the tank... just under a quarter tank.
